Intensive TOEFL®

Because students in Level 9 and higher can enroll in NESE’s Intensive TOEFL® course for as little as one month or for as many as six months, they can design their English language program so that it is uniquely suited to their specific needs. In addition, as NESE’s TOEFL® course is divided into two main skill areas – listening & speaking and reading & writing – students can concentrate on the particular sections of the TOEFL® Exam that they most wish to improve. For example, a student who needs to improve his score dramatically on all parts of the TOEFL® test, might take NESE’s TOEFL® course from 11:00 am to 3:15 pm each day for six months while another student might take only Reading & Writing for TOEFL® for 1 month. Whatever a student’s goals, NESE’s intensive TOEFL® course will help him reach them as quickly as possible.

  • Listening & Speaking for TOEFL®
  • This component of NESE’s intensive course focuses specifically on the listening and speaking sections of the iBT Next Generation TOEFL® Exam. In class, students practice listening to dialogues and lectures and learn the skills required to respond to both the integrated and independent speaking portions of the exam.
  • (Completion of Level 8 or Initial Placement in Level 9 Required.)
  • Reading & Writing for TOEFL®
  • This component of NESE’s intensive course focuses specifically on the reading comprehension and the writing sections of the iBT Next Generation TOEFL® Exam. In class, students improve their skimming and scanning abilities, learn information recognition strategies, and acquire the writing skills necessary to complete the independent and integrated writing sections of the exam.
  • (Completion of Level 8 or Initial Placement in Level 9 Required.)

Intensive Business English

The NESE Intensive Business English course, like the Intensive TOEFL® course, offers students a great deal of flexibility, allowing them to design a program ideally suited to their needs. The course has two components: Business Communication and Business Reading & Writing, and students can take both or just one of these classes. Additionally, there are special separate Intensive Business English courses for professionals.

  • Business Communication
  • This class focuses on developing a student’s ability to use and understand common business/professional vocabulary as it occurs in everyday speech. Students improve listening comprehension through the use of radio programs, discussions, and short texts. Students are expected to present opinions on a variety of business topics. There are regular drills and homework focused on conversational uses of business vocabulary and idioms.
  • (Completion of Level 7 or initial placement in Level 8 required.)

Private Classes

Pronunciation

Tutors help students become more confident in conversing in both formal and informal situations by learning and practicing the correct pronunciation of difficult vowel sounds, voiced and unvoiced consonants, blends and verb endings. Tutors identify particular student challenges and facilitate production of accurate sounds in response to prompts, while also paying attention to both accent and intonation.

(No minimum level required.)

Legal English

By utilizing a wide range of sources, including legal history texts, landmark cases and collections of jargon, tutors immerse students in an American legal context. Students learn common terminology for case analysis and legal document review. When possible, tutors and their students visit an actual local courtroom and view proceedings first hand.

(Completion of Level 7 or initial placement in Level 8 required.)

University Preparation

Tutors work with students to help them with every aspect of their university preparation, from deciding which college or university best suits their unique set of needs, to preparing the Common Application (including the personal statement) to sharing research and citation strategies and standards.

(Completion of Level 7 or initial placement in Level 8 required.)

Workplace Communication

Tutors use a range of business materials and draw from a number of contexts to help students learn professional etiquette and preferred terminology for managing an array of situations in the workplace. Common areas of discussion include:

  • AI (Artificial Intelligence)
  • Issues of privacy and intellectual property
  • Electronic vs. other forms of written communication
  • Presentations
  • Socializing professionally
  • Ethics
  • Succeeding in an ever-changing workplace

(Completion of Level 6 or Initial Placement in Level 7 required.)

Medical English

Tutors utilize common English medical terminology to help students understand and communicate more successfully in medical settings. In addition to focusing on jargon, tutors use real world medical settings to practice set language used to discuss symptoms, testing, diagnoses and conditions, and prognosis and treatment. Naturally, students compare medical settings and practices in their country with those found in the US and aim to speak autonomously and confidently about their own experiences in medicine.

(Completion of Level 7 or initial placement in Level 8 required.)
