Anna Shine, Ed.M., Harvard University
Founder & President of NESE

Anna Shine, Ed.M., Harvard University
Founder & President of NESE

Anna Shine, a successful and well-respected educator, holds a Master's degree in Education from Harvard University and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan. While studying at Harvard, Ms. Shine’s academic focus was the design and culture of successful schools as well as the characteristics of effective learning environments. Creating NESE gave her an opportunity to put theory into practice, and accordingly, she founded NESE, a school that is uniquely guided by its commitment to excellence.

Ms. Shine's experience includes teaching and directing English language programs in both the United States and Europe. She also developed and directed the English language program at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital. More recently, Ms. Shine was recognized for leading NESE by the Boston Globe, in its award for the “Top 100 Women-Led Massachusetts Organizations”. Ms. Shine was named #11 of these 100 leaders and notably, she was the only recipient who is an educator.

Ms. Shine is British but she has lived in the United States (Hawaii, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Massachusetts), Europe (Germany, France, England, Scotland, Wales), South America (Argentina, Brazil) and the South Atlantic Ocean (St. Helena). As a result, she is particularly sensitive to the problems, both linguistic and cultural, that a foreign student may have. And she knows, personally, why it is so important to understand a culture to learn its language. Her expertise, experience, and empathy have allowed her to create NESE, a school that epitomizes outstanding education and remains a leader in its field.

Martha Hall, Ed.M., Harvard University
Director of NESE

Martha Hall was trained at Harvard University in its renowned Graduate School of Education. She further distinguished herself while undergoing additional training in English as a Second Language at St. Andrew's University in Scotland. Most recently, because of her exceptional skills, Ms. Hall was appointed to write and edit the Teachers’ Guide to the preeminent and best-selling ESL grammar series, Understanding and Using English Grammar by Betty Azar.

Ms. Hall's rigorous academic background and her 20+ years as a leader in the field of English as A Second Language have given her a unique understanding of second language acquisition and curriculum development. In sum, Ms. Hall's international experiences have provided her with wide access to the most innovative and effective teaching methods. As a result, Ms. Hall remains a tremendous resource to all students, teachers, and staff at NESE.

Martha Hall, Ed.M., Harvard University
Director of NESE

"When I joined NESE as its Academic Director almost 20 years ago, I certainly knew that my new position would be a challenging and important step, albeit a transitory one, in my career. However what I did not realize about NESE at the time was that I would find both an educational and work environment that was so energizing and special that it has kept me here for all these years. When I started working at NESE, I had already gained significant experience in other well-known English schools; however, I could not have imagined that my new position at NESE would become my mission as an educator. Today, as director of this institution, one of my main goals is to ensure the continuation of this remarkable environment, one that is warm and stimulating, both for NESE students and its staff, while keeping alive this sense of NESE as a unique and exceptional place to learn English."

"It was my intention when I founded NESE to create an English language program of the highest quality and to foster an atmosphere in which students readily learned more than just English; I deliberately sought to create an environment of kindness, tolerance, and compassion towards all. Throughout NESE’s history, I have worked hard to ensure that NESE's distinctive mission is never compromised. Like Edgerton's famous milk drop photo, which shows a center drop surrounded by points in a crown, I have deliberately surrounded myself - and populated NESE - with staff and teachers who have expertise that our students benefit from. With the support of NESE's staff, a number of whom have committed more than 15 years of their professional lives to the school, and all of whom have been asked to share NESE's mission with me, NESE has earned its exceptional reputation. Because of this approach, NESE has also become a unique, world-class educational institution where students learn, develop, and make life-long connections. I look forward to welcoming you here."

NESE Teachers

Because of its outstanding reputation, NESE has been able to attract teachers who hold both undergraduate or advanced degrees from some of the top universities in the US, including Harvard, Yale, and Columbia.

NESE teachers have strong academic backgrounds and a mix of both domestic and foreign teaching experience.  They are dynamic professionals with exceptional teaching experience who have been selected to teach at NESE because of their high level of expertise and dedication.

In fact, members of our academic staff are so well respected that they have been asked to provide training for other English teachers.

NESE Staff

Since it was first founded, NESE has been able to attract a very special group of professionals, and it is the contribution of each one of these staff members that has helped to make NESE such a unique environment in which to learn English. Some of our staff, we are proud to say, have actually been part of NESE for more than 15 years.

However, regardless of their time at NESE, all our staff are equally committed to supporting the school and giving their best to NESE students in order to ensure an exceptional school environment, one that is entirely supportive to all who are here.

From the moment you check in at the school’s reception desk, you will realize how hard our team works to make your experience at NESE the most extraordinary part of your path towards English fluency.
