Personalized Language Acquisition Method

One of NESE’s distinctive characteristics is its student-centered teaching philosophy. This philosophy is based on the understanding that students can best reach their goals when they, themselves, recognize that they are learning in a class that meets their specific needs.

Most students feel that one aspect of their English is weaker - or stronger -  than the others (they can speak better than they can write, for example). However, in many English programs, students are placed into the same level for each skill area, regardless of the results of their initial diagnostic skills assessment or what they, themselves identify as their own strengths and weaknesses.

However, NESE, via its student-centered philosophy, has intentionally designed its placement test as well as its programs to accommodate a student's specific - yet often unequal - strengths and weaknesses in each language skill area. Objective measurements are combined with a student’s self-assessment to provide each student with his own personalized language acquisition path, a path that is uniquely structured for him.

Rigorous 90-Minute Classes and Complete Linguistic and Cultural Immersion

NESE was founded on sound academic research that clearly demonstrates the benefits of longer class periods.  For this reason, unlike many schools that offer 45 or 50 minute classes, all classes at NESE are intentionally a full 90 minutes long, with no scheduled breaks. This provides students with one of the most intensive language learning environments that exists.

At NESE, students learn more than just language; they learn American culture as well. Students are required to have textbooks for classes, and will be given homework from them, but they should be prepared for much more. In class, they will read newspapers and magazines, watch videos, role-play, do exercises in the computer lab, and interview Americans. NESE also adheres to an English-only policy at the school, which further immerses students in the language day to day and moment to moment. Because NESE's Intensive Program exposes students to American language and culture, students are given access to the fastest language learning possible.

Programs for Students

NESE places special emphasis on providing students with the skills and guidance they need to attain their educational goals. Accordingly, in addition to our elective TOEFL® Preparation course and our After-School University Preparation course, NESE also offers the Institutional TOEFL® Exam to higher level students each month and provides many additional services to help prospective university students.

Students have the choice of participating in NESE's Intensive Program (9:00-3:15 each day) or in its Semi-Intensive Program (9:00-12:30 each day). Both programs offer 10 levels of language and culture training, full access to all NESE facilities, and a choice of either dormitory or homestay accommodation.

Programs for Professionals

Professionals have the choice of participating in NESE’s Intensive (9:00-3:15 each day) or Semi-Intensive Program (9:00-12:30 each day), both of which offer 10 levels of language and culture training.

However, because NESE understands the special challenges, both linguistic and practical, that professionals face, it provides an exclusive structure for adults. Classes, types of teachers, activities, housing, computer labs, and lounge areas are intentionally designed to meet professionals learning styles, limited time, and practical needs. Further, professionals at NESE  have a choice of attending only the classes that best suit their specific goals.

In addition to NESE's regular Intensive and Semi-Intensive Programs, elective courses, such as Business English for Professionals and private instruction are options that exist for professionals.

Elective & After-School Courses

In addition to NESE's academic classes, students and professionals can choose elective(1) and After-School Courses(2), including TOEFL® Preparation, Business English, Legal English, Pronunciation, and University Preparation. Advanced students can also take courses in their area of particular interest at Harvard Extension School(3) and other area colleges.

Academic English Courses

Grammar & Idioms, Conversation & Listening, and Reading & Writing

All NESE students can follow the Academic English Courses as outlined on the chart below. Each of these courses consists of 10 levels, and students typically complete one level each month. Thus, a student who arrives at NESE with minimal or no knowledge of English can expect to complete the entire NESE 10-level curriculum within 10 months. Students who complete Level 10 acquire a level of proficiency that enables them to successfully use their English in a wide range of professional and academic environments.
